Project Owner: Virginia Department of Transportation
Project Location: Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel
Contract Amount: $1,833,000.00
Project Description: This critical infrastructure project involves the repairs to the Fire Main for the fire suppression system within the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. During the project the fire suppression system will be down, and local fire departments from Hampton & Norfolk will be covering the tunnel in case of emergencies. Most of the work is to take place in the exhaust air duct underneath the roadway. The scope of work includes the demolition of portion of the concrete wall underneath the tunnel in order to expose the 60 year piping. Once the pipe is exposed, a Cured In-Place Pipe Liner is to be installed inside the existing Cast Iron Piping and then cured in place using air pressure and steam. New mechanical pipe work will be completed by in house WMS mechanical crews. Existing valves will be taken apart and delivered to a shop in Norfolk where they are to be sand blasted and coated with a high dollar epoxy coating. The new valves and new piping will receive a Fire Department Red exterior epoxy coating to help prevent corrosion. Finally a hydrostatic test will be completed to ensure 100% watertight seal on the existing system.
